A free, privacy-first tool that helps you evaluate every purchase decision through 6 different financial lenses.
Spending Reality Check is a free impulse buy calculator designed to help you make smarter purchasing decisions. Instead of relying on gut feeling, it evaluates any purchase through 6 concrete financial dimensions: how many work hours it costs you, what else the same money could buy, what it could grow to if invested, what percentage of your daily income it represents, the cost per use with a verdict system, and the annual impact if it becomes a recurring expense.
The idea came after buying a $280 kitchen appliance that was used exactly twice. When we calculated the cost per use, it was $140 β more than a nice dinner out. That single realization led to a deeper question: how many of our purchases would fail this simple test? We built Spending Reality Check to answer that question for everyone β a free tool that makes the invisible costs of every purchase visible before you spend, not after you regret.
We believe every dollar you spend deserves conscious thought. Impulse buying costs the average American over $300 per month β money that could be invested, saved, or spent on things that truly matter. Our mission is to make the hidden costs of every purchase visible before you commit your money, so you can make decisions based on numbers, not emotions.
Work Hours β Converts the price into hours of your labor. Equivalent Items β Shows what else the same money could buy. Investment Regret β Calculates what the money could grow to if invested at 7% over 5, 10, and 20 years. Daily Income Percent β Reveals what slice of your earnings the purchase represents. Cost Per Use + Verdict β Divides the price by estimated uses and benchmarks it against category standards. Annual Spending β Projects the yearly cost if the purchase becomes a monthly habit.
All calculations happen entirely in your browser. We do not collect, store, or transmit any of your input data. Your preferences (language and currency) are saved in localStorage on your device. We use no backend databases, no user accounts, and no tracking scripts beyond basic analytics.
Spending Reality Check is built with Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS β modern web technologies that enable fast, responsive experiences. The entire application runs client-side with multi-currency support (USD, EUR, GBP, CNY, JPY, and more), making it useful for users worldwide.
